wellalright:

my brother sent me a link to this slideshow about the movie the help.

set in mississippi in 1963 The Help tackles heavy issues and stays true to the look and feel of the era in every way. while the movie made us cry, the clothes and furnishings made us swoon. here’s how to bring a little southern charm into your home and wardrobe.

yep, nothing like that good ol’ racist 1960’s southern charm. it’s based on the book and it’s about being a black maid working in a white household, but all this slideshow does is go, “yeah, all that stuff was bad, but hey, those mean white ladies wore some nice dresses right? and weren’t the kitchens they never used pretty awesome looking? why not try and capture that look for yourself?”

look at that last caption, “at your service”? oh my god, i mean it’s just like, “hey maybe it was pretty cool when civil rights weren’t a thing, you know? i mean white and black people came out of it alright. why not put on this nice dress and pretend you’re back there? throw a garden party with your gal pals, life was pretty sweet.” it’s like that banana republic mad men thing, only this is all about race.

Everything about this is terrible. Who was the editor who was like, “this is a great idea and not racist at all, why have we not already published this?”

Disgusted with everything. Going back to studying math.

Where does one purchase the unassuming Black woman in the maids uniform?  Bloomingdales?  Nordstroms?

You can see the black women in their maid outfits in every picture but one…

lol @ commentary

You have GOT to be fucking kidding me. White people kill me always wanting to go back and time and do some “old fashioned” shit, like having 20s theme parties. Like do you know where I was in the 20s? Not partying with yo’ ass! They could have done anything else but this spread. Like who said this was okay?

Don’t mind me as I get all capslock BUT CAN WE PLEASE STOP ROMANTICIZING REALLY SHITTY THINGS ABOUT THE PAST?  I mean, great!  People who want to  dress up and have fucking garden parties and what the fuck ever—have at it.  BUT  for the love of all things holy and profane, don’t do that as a way to erase ugly shit like Jim Crow, lynchings, and institutionalized oppression.  Even a book or a movie that is THAT problematic does have as its basic premise, “Hey! Racism is really bad and it existed in the ‘60’s” (I’ll leave the many, many issues I have with the book and likely the movie to my past and future posts).  To then shrug that off and romanticize the fashion and the oppression is just…it’s gross.

Because I mean, seriously, people who do this shit are Missing The Fucking Point.

(And I want to slap people go on and on about the “good old days.”  Like, systematic and brutal oppression of people of color, women, the disabled, gays and lesbians, etc. was somehow good.  Or our ever expanding military-industrial complex was just awesome.  I mean, really??? REALLY??? Fuck the good old days.  There wasn’t much good in them for a LOT of people.  Sheesh.)
